About

BIOGRAPHY

Lenka Novakova is a Czech-born Canadian artist, researcher, and educator whose work explores the borders between theatre and visual arts through large-scale installations, immersive and participatory environments, audio-visual landscapes, site-specific work and critical writings.

Currently a postdoctoral fellow at  Hogeschool (ZUYD): Maastricht Academy of New Media and Design in Maastricht, Lenka received her Ph.D. in Humanities /Fine Arts (2018), and MFA in sculpture/installation art (2009) from Concordia University in Montreal.  She completed her training in sculpture and installation art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia (2006) as well as her formal education in traditional arts, sculpture, and stone carving in the Czech Republic.

Lenka presents her work in Canada, the US and elsewhere. Her research has been supported by major provincial and federal research-creation grants such as the Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Société et Culture (FRQSC), Canada Council for the Arts (CAC), and Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ). She has received numerous fellowships and awards from organizations such as The Corning Museum of Glass and Urban Glass in New York, Vermont Studio Center, La Chambre Blanche in Quebec, Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico, and others. Her work was presented at Project Integral Sao Paulo-Quebec, SASC Sao Paulo, Brazil, DMZ festival in Korea, Gallery Puls, Alvik, Norway and USF Verftet, Bergen, Norway and at the Historical Hospital Kuks in the Czech Republic and many others.

Research Interests

As an artist, researcher and educator, Lenka’s focus is on the development of immersive, interactive and participatory environments and performance defined as a construct of human and non-human agency (further defined as materials, architectural structures, recorded and real-time audio-visual media, audiences and/or performers). Her research interests revolve around 1) The development of scenographic environments; 2) The role of technology in performance space; 3) The exploration of materials and rethinking their roles as performative agents; 4) The investigation of audience participation in scenographic environments, and 5) The development of interactive audio-visual systems.

Artist Statement

As a practitioner, Lenka is concerned with an ephemeral poetic quality, reflective thought, and a moment of re-creation through constructed environments, simple technologies and moving light, with crossover in cinema and theatre technologies. Within these foundations, she explores qualities of space as a platform of possibilities in the process of rethinking the traditional divisions of space in both theatre and exhibition. Through her installation projects, performances research, site-specific work, and writing, she questions how the work exists in these contexts and how its dissemination affects the perception of the viewer. Most recently, Lenka has engaged in subjects exploring the performance of landscape. Her explorations of the landscape appear thematically in several contexts:

1) Conversations with Landscapes: Lakes, Oceans, Skies and the Weather

2) Conversations with Landscapes: The Mountains & The Forest

3) Conversations with Landscapes: The City
